DIY Laundry Detergent
I'm a sucker for a good deal. And at around 4 cents a load, I couldn't resist trying my hand at making my own laundry detergent. I found a recipe online, hurried to the grocery store to pick up the goods (paid around 8 bucks for everything), and got to grating!
Do you want to pay $.04 a load compared to $.45 a load? I figured that (on average) I would now only pay around 6 dollars A YEAR on laundry detergent. Convinced? Here's the recipe:
--1 cup of borax
--1 cup of washing soda
--2 cups of grated soap
Here's how you make it:
1. Buy Borax, Washing Soda, and a basic bar of soap. I used Ivory, but I've read that Fels Naptha is also a great brand.
2. Finely grate the soap.

3. Mix it all together and what do you get? Laundry Detergent!
I did read that using a food processor to blend it all together is a plus, but I don't have one! I just made sure the soap was ground finely and I mixed it well. Plus, before I use it, I give it a good shake! Also, make sure you store it in an airtight container!
To use:
Toss 1 tablespoon (or two if it's a large load or extra dirty!) into the laundry machine
That's it!
I've used it on a number of loads now and I love it! DIY laundry detergent is simple, effective, and (best of all) a great way to save money!
